Genre Decision

 For my final project my group has decided to utilized the mystery genre. My group chose this genre after a long period of deliberation not just because of the conventions of the genre but also how the genres traditional aspects match with my pitch. For example this genre fits my pitch because the mystery genres aspects will allow my group to create uncertainty around the main character of our film. This method of creating our film would be much more successful for our when compared to another genre such as a thriller because mystery films do not require as much edited in effects that our out of our capabilities. This genre selection is also beneficial because it relies heavily on uncertainty and unknowingness, this allows my group to not have to purchase an exotic or expensive appearing prop that would be revealed in the briefcase.

    In terms of conventions my group selected this genre because the long takes combined with tracking shots and pans fit perfectly with the side scrolling and hall crawling aesthetic my group is trying to achieve in this film. This musical attributes of the mystery genre also include fast paced and nerve racking music which will do great in creating nervousness and excitement throughout our film. The angles of the shots in the mystery genre is another large reason we selected this genres as the low and high angles create power disparities between characters with out the use of dialogue and utilize the show not tell technique. Speaking of angles the mystery genre also utilizes shots that compliment these angles very well. For example the mystery genre often utilizes long shots to reveal an entire room or hallway in which a period of action or suspense is taking place.

    Overall I believe that this selection of genre will be beneficial for my production not only through the conventions in the genre but also the mood that those conventions create. This genre provides an exciting outlet for my group to tap into our full creative abilities and create an amazing production.

Genre Re-Adjustment: Project Blog

   Our group realized minor flaws in our film as we continue through this production process. The biggest issue that has come to surface is that our genre isn't represented as well as we thought it was going to be. I did not think this was going to be an issue at the start. In fact, I thought the mystery genre was the perfect fit. As I am watching how the production is unfolding, it seems as if our problem is that we can't necessarily get the feel of a true mystery film in our 2 minute clip. This means, our film's conventions don't completely align with those of a real mystery. I still believe that it can fit the genre, but giving it the title of a mystery-thriller would be more fitting. Our Pitch

A person receives a briefcase and is unaware of its contents, unbeknownst to him he is being followed.          This pitch has great potential because of its ability to harness the unknown and be action packed in a short period of time. The pitch also conforms well to the settings we have available due to our access to the urban setting. Furthermore this pitch doesn't require props inaccessible to the group making it a great candidate. However, this pitch struggles with a lack of dialogue and it will be difficult to facilitate conversation throughout. I believe that despite this the pitch's positive aspects outweigh the negative ones because its exciting and is mysterious.
