short film research: Mutt/ Drama
The way this short film was developed was very straightforward. Although the short film is only 13 minutes, it still grabs the audience's emotional side. The plot is on addiction and is a well known topic to everyone. The topic can be related to others due to the fact it is a real world problem. The short starts off by this girl ringing someone's apartment building. Once she is let in, we see a guy wearing dark shades and gulping down orange juice. He then takes off the shades and he doesn’t look too well. The sister then asks if she wants to go to her place. From just this first scene we can already infer that this film is based on addiction. The short film is a drama which is clear from the acting, sounds, editing, and more. The common sound used in this film was diegetic sounds. The use of diegetic sounds helps to add more emphasis on some of the characters physical state. For example, as Michael, the alcoholic, is drinking the juice, the effect of hearing the big gulps help to show that he may be an alcoholic. It adds a more exaggerated effect to the scene. For editing in this short film, reverse shots are mainly used. The reason for this is there is a lot of dialogue going on between Michael, his sister, and his dad. Reverse shots in drama are used in order to show the conversation between characters and to clearly show their facial expressions and body language. Acting in this film was very serious which helped to set the mood for the film. Because the film is based on addiction, the mood of the film should be strict and serious. The acting for the character of Michael stood out from the sister and dad because he was a drunk. He is more jumpy, stubborn and violent. Michael punched his own father which goes to show how bad his addiction is. The sister and dad's acting was more calm and serious since they were trying to get Michael to go to a rehab center. An element in this film that I liked was the little argument between Michael and his dad. This really helped to portray the drama genre in this film. In this argument, Michael also punches his dad which added an unexpected thrill to the audience.
