short film research : Traitor Knight/ Drama
This short film is based on a college fraternity house. A brother in the house almost killed a student by making the student due a pledge task. In the film, the student is in the hospital after falling off the roof of the frat house. With the fate of the house and their college careers at stake, brother will turn on brother. The way this film was developed was more detailed and complex compared to the short film Mutt. The plot for Mutt was more straightforward and simply portrayed. Traitor Knight had more mystery to it than the short film Mutt. Traitor Knight had the audience wondering whether or not they were going to kick out the brother who was involved in the accident. Both films still fall under the drama genre and I will explain now. As I researched in the past blog about the short film Mutt, many conventions from the drama genre were used. This film also uses common convention which makes it a drama. Common sounds used in this film were diegetic sounds. The use of diegetic sounds in this film helps add more exaggerated effects on the characters emotions. For example, Hunter, the boy who gave the pledge task to another guy, got very upset when he found out he was kicked off the fraternity. This film used diegetic sounds while Hunter was throwing things to make the scene more dramatic and intriguing to the audience. For editing in this short film, a lot of reverse shots are used since there was a lot of dialogue going on between the brothers. Reverse shots in drama are used in order to show the conversation between characters and to clearly show their facial expressions and body language. Acting in this film was very intense and loud. Throughout the whole film there was a lot of arguing and suspense on whether or not Hunter was gonna get kicked out. Other drama films could include the second film I watched, “Fauve”, or movies like Dear Evan Hansen or The Greatest Showman. I like the feeling of suspense created when watching these films because it is similar to the feeling of watching a horror movie. It leaves you wondering what happens next. After the film, you may experience a sense of unease or worry that can be very unsettling, since most drama films do not have a happy or firm ending.
